About The School

Oak Grove Elementary operates on the year-round calendar. Students at the year-round schools are divided into four groups, called tracks, with each track having its own calendar. In a year-round elementary school, the traditional 180-day school year is divided into nine-week quarters with a three week break at the end of each quarter. Students are in school the same number of days as their counterparts in traditional schools; the days are simply redistributed throughout the year. The reorganized schedule is called a 45/15 – 45 days in school, 15 days off.

About the School

Since its founding in 1978, Athens Drive Magnet High School has led the way in Wake County. Athens has a robust, all-encompassing curriculum that is designed to satisfy the demands of our diverse student population. They are a data-driven learning community that emphasizes learning and teaching methods that are supported by research. They encourage and support students as they pursue their academic passions. Through participation in Professional Learning Teams (PLTs) and innovative academic and business partnerships, the team of committed and caring professionals seeks to expand their knowledge base. They plan the curriculum and talk about the various needs of every student in PLT groups. Teachers and staff at Athens Drive have access to a range of interventions to support students through the Pyramid of Intervention, including the Athens Advantage Time, which includes tutorial time built into the school day.

Academics

The medical sciences and global health initiative’s theme will offer a solid research foundation and equip the students for future pursuits. They are surrounded by real-world examples and add real-world significance to the essential standards. Students in an English class might, for instance, conduct research on a current ethical issue in medicine such as minors’ rights to refuse bone marrow donation and write a persuasive essay about it. Students of mathematics may utilize epidemiological data to make deductions regarding the effects of the Zika virus. Students studying social studies could contrast the Zika virus’ effects with the post-Columbian American smallpox outbreak. A healthcare facility design class might conduct research and discuss current best practices. Every classroom experiences the theme.
